Cloud Nothings Bring Lo-Fi Party to Brooklyn
After playing both weekends of Coachella in California, Cloud Nothings made a stop in Brooklyn to play a free show with Amanda X for Converse Rubber Tracks Live on Wednesday night (April 22).
The Music Hall of Williamsburg was packed with fans ready to rage once the Cleveland-based favorites took the stage – and rage they did. From the moment frontman Dylan Baldi, bassist T.J. Duke and drummer Jayson Gerycz hit the stage, the crowd erupted. Kicking off their set with "Pattern Walks" off their latest record, Here and Nowhere Else, the energy in the room started to increase as everyone began jumping up to the rhythm. As the set went on, the movement shifted to moshing and a organized chaos formed in the middle of the floor. Despite what was happening in the crowd, Baldi played with a calm demeanor, which only changed when he wailed on the mic.
Although some were ready to dance around to their music, one couldn't help but be fixated on Gerycz's drumming. Not only are his beats intricate and precise, but the passion he puts into the drums is so apparent on his face, it's difficult not to stare. Even if their grungy, 90s-esque sound isn't necessarily your thing, his skills with a drum kit should draw you to one of their gigs alone.
While all the tracks were hits with the fans, "I'm Not Part of Me," "No Future/No Past" and "Fall In" elicited the most reaction as everyone started to sing along in a unified chant. Although Cloud Nothings practically killed their set, Duke went into a bit of a technical issue when a bass string broke while they played, which we think hurt him more than the instrument. Luckily, Amanda X guitarist Cat Park came to the rescue with Kat Bean's bass for Duke borrow. You've gotta love when bands are there for each other.
Before Cloud Nothings hit the stage, Philadelphia's Amanda X brought their sounds to Brooklyn. Composed of Park, Bean and drummer and recent Brooklyn transplant Tiff Yoon, this female band combined gritty rock with pop-like melodies that will instantly get you moving. The band recently released their debut album, Amnesia, which you can get here.
