Hear Dan Auerbach’s New Album ‘Waiting on a Song’
The full-album stream, which comes courtesy of NPR's First Listen program and is embedded below, arrives after Auerbach released a trio of videos for singles from Waiting on a Song. The first, for "Shine on Me," accompanied the news of the album in March. "King of a One Horse Town," debuted in late April; that clip was followed by a promo for the title track, which posted less than a week ago.
As previously reported, Waiting on a Song took a portion of its creative spark from Auerbach's decision to pull up stakes in Ohio and move to Nashville. "Living in Nashville has definitely changed the way I think about music and the way that I record it," he explained in the press release announcing the LP. “I didn’t have all of these resources before. I am working with some of the greatest musicians that ever lived."
One of those musicians was ex-Dire Straits guitarist Mark Knopfler, who contributed rhythm guitar to a track after getting a call from Auerbach. Renowned guitarist Duane Eddy also appears on the album, which boasts co-writes with acclaimed songwriter John Prine.
"I learned so much from these guys," Auerbach said of the sessions, which involved a number of grizzled Nashville session vets — many of whom were, according to Auerbach, happy to cut an album live in the studio like the old days. "These guys tell me they’re genuinely thrilled to be here because we’re making records like they used to."
