While Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns remained silent for eight years, he kept himself quite busy, and now, fans will finally get to hear what he’s been working on.

Talk, Johns’ highly-anticipated solo album, will hit the streets on May 22. According to a statement released today (May 1), Johns has replaced soaring vocals and loud guitars with “urban beats and aching falsetto croons. Dollops of lush R&B are laced with cruise electro flavors and some dark glitchy bedroom production touches to create a stylish take on modern soul.” You can get a fresh taste of his new music with the track, "Cool on Fire," above.

While this song and album may be a surprise to longtime Silverchair fans, the shock was somewhat softened earlier this year when Johns released “Aerial Love”:

Johns is no stranger to experimenting with different sounds. It’s not hard to follow his evolution with Silverchair from 1995’s Frogstomp to 2007’s Young Modern. “What’s funny is that when Silverchair released Frogstomp, most people went out of the way to tell me how much it sucked,” he says. “Then when we made Diorama a few years later everyone started telling me how I should go back to making Frogstomp. I guess now I’ll be told to go back and make Diorama again!”

That lack of worry about outside opinions is summed up in the new record’s title. “I don’t really care what most people think,” Johns explains. “Let them talk.”

Talk is available for pre-order in a number of bundles; you can grab all the information you need here.
