Ed Sheeran Fan Jailed After Playing ‘Shape of You’ for Half an Hour
Being a fan of Ed Sheeran is one thing. Blasting your favorite Ed Sheeran song is another. Playing it at top volume, over and over and over again until you drive your neighbors batty, will apparently get you sent to jail in the U.K.
Sonia Bryce of Willenhall in England's Midlands received an eight-week sentence after playing Sheeran's "Shape of You" for half an hour, according to the Daily Mail. Judge Philip Gregory described the incident as a "wholly unacceptable level of disturbance."
Bryce had earlier been accused of disturbing others with "music, shouting, swearing and banging - time and time again," and has already served a shorter stint for creating a nuisance. Walsall Housing Group Ltd., Bryce's landlord, secured a court order barring her from such behavior, leading to multiple arrests for breach and then a six-week jail term last December.
Clare Tidmarsh, a mother of five who lives nearby, described this latest Sheeran-related outburst as "the straw that broke the camel's back."
Gregory agreed, telling Bryce: "You must learn that you should behave as a reasonable and responsible adult, and not make life for your neighbors the misery that you have. ... Everybody is entitled to live in a degree of peace and quiet with the usual give and take of society, but you do not behave like a civilized person, and you have got to learn that you will."
Bryce argued that the song hadn't been played continuously, adding that "she doesn't even like" Ed Sheeran, but Tidmarsh countered with a detailed "diary of events" cataloging the noise.
