Petition Launched to Make Mountain Goats’ John Darnielle U.S. Poet Laureate
Hey, Mountain Goats fans, here's your chance to have your voice be heard by helping principal member John Darnielle have his voice be heard. An online petition has been launched to make Darnielle the U.S. Poet Laureate.
If the petition proves successful, he would be the 20th person in history to hold the title.
Darnielle, who has released 14 albums and spins clever and quirky folk tales in his signature neo-Americana way, would also be the first-ever musician elected to the post. That is, if the petition succeeds. Natasha Trethewey is the current Poet Laureate, for those of you keeping score at home.
You can go here to sign the petition, which extols Darnielle's poetic virtues, if you are so inclined.
Below is the description of the beloved indie artist and an explanation of why he's worthy of such an exalted and lofty cultural title. There's also a little nudge to President Barack Obama.
John Darnielle is an American institution. An inspiration to poets, artists and sundry other
human beings both in America and world-wide, Mr. Darnielle is a unique voice in modern word and music. For over twenty years, Mr. Darnielle has struggled on our behalf to come to terms with the base instincts of the human psyche. In literature, there is no man more worthy of recognition through the award of U.S. Poet Laureate than John Darnielle. So do it, Mr. President. Do it!
