Kicking off the first of three consecutive shows in New York City, Lorde -- and her legion of screaming fans -- packed the beautiful Pier 97 on New York City's Hudson River last night (Sept. 14) for a 15-song set, including covers of two tracks from Kanye West and Bon Iver.

The night began with a simple beam of light shining on Lorde as she belted through the haunting lyrics of 'Glory and Gore,' the fifth single released from her debut LP, 'Pure Heroine.' While the stage set-up expanded from the one beam of light, things never got too crazy; the focus was less on the music (performed by keyboardist Jimmy Mac and drummer Ben Barter) and more on Lorde's eruptive onstage presence. Her deep vocals floated out over the crowd while she convulsed to the beat of the music behind her.

Throughout the comfortable setlist, Lorde spent little time chatting with the crowd; that is, until she wrapped up 'Still Sane.' Taking several minutes to talk to her fans, Lorde explained how much New York City means to her, almost as if it's her second home. "This place is a part of who I am now," she said -- which was, obviously, greeted with screeching approval.

As she prepared to start the next song, 'Ribs,' she opened up to the audience. Talking about the meaning of the song, she remarked, "I'm not gonna be a kid forever ... it scares the living s--- out of me that I'm gonna have to be practical all the time ... I always want to be the person who can think like a five-year-old or a 15-year-old. Think young."

The only flaw of the night came from Lorde's cover of Kanye West's 'Flashing Lights'; it was simply too short, almost more of an interlude than an actual performance. With Bon Iver's 'Heavenly Father,' though, she put her eerie spin on the beautiful song, much to her fans' delight.

The New Zealand artist performs at New York City's United Palace tonight (Sept. 15) and tomorrow, and then heads south for a few days. Get her full tour itinerary here.
