Radiohead Drum Tech Scott Johnson Killed in Stage Collapse
A sold out Radiohead concert ended before it began on Saturday (June 16) when the stage collapsed, injuring three people and killing one, now identified as the band's drum technician, Scott Johnson.
Radiohead issued a public statement of mourning for drum technician Scott Johnson, who was trapped beneath the stage wreckage and killed. "We have all been shattered by the loss of Scott Johnson, our friend and colleague. He was a lovely man, always positive, supportive and funny; a highly skilled and valued member of our great road crew," wrote the band on its website. "We will miss him very much. Our thoughts and love are with Scott's family and all those close to him."
Ontario government officials were combing through the wreckage over the weekend, trying to determine what caused the collapse, while the injured parties underwent treatment. According to reports, one man was hospitalized, while the injuries to two other bystanders were minor enough to be treated at the scene. A police spokesperson said criminal charges were a possibility, although he stressed that the investigation had just begun.
One witness was quoted as saying the incident happened remarkably quickly. "It was like fireworks went off, and then boom, the stage just crumbled to the ground in a matter of seconds -- I had never really seen anything like it," said concertgoer Mike Kensey.
This tragedy is the latest in a harrowing spate of stage collapses that have occurred over the last year, starting with Cheap Trick's performance at the 2011 Ottawa Bluesfest and including the Indiana State Fair show that killed multiple onlookers just before Sugarland was due to take the stage. Just last week, 3 Doors Down and ZZ Top canceled a performance due to concerns with the safety of the stage.
