Watch Sleater-Kinney Answer Teen Girls’ Questions for Rookie’s ‘Ask a Grown Woman’

Sleater-Kinney’s Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein are the latest famous adults to answer the questions of Rookie magazine’s young, female readers in its ongoing “Ask a Grown” video series. Check out their responses in the clip up above.

Following in the footsteps of Beastie Boys’ Ad-Rock, Run the Jewels and Karen O, Tucker and Brownstein thoughtfully tackle questions on how to break up with a boyfriend, go about a first kiss and come out to friends.

When it comes to breakups, Brownstein advises listeners to be “honest and acknowledge how you feel,” adding, “He might be mad for a little bit, but I think he’s going to appreciate you being up front with him.” As for first kisses, Tucker assures Rookie readers that it’s absolutely okay to be scared, while Brownstein suggests not overthinking “the right way to kiss or the wrong way to kiss,” but rather just taking the plunge.

And finally, Tucker recommends anyone considering how to come out to their friends should seek out support from resources in their communities or at their schools. Brownstein agreed and suggested talking about it with a close and trusted friend, adding, “These small acts bravery in your life are great steps to becoming an open person.”
