Walking Papers Ride the Groove at L.A.’s Whisky-a-Go-Go
With a little break since their last date, Walking Papers rolled into Los Angeles and wasted no time shaking off any rust with a blistering performance at the legendary Whisky-a-Go-Go Thursday night (Nov. 21).
While many greats have played the Whisky in the past, Walking Papers started carving out their own Los Angeles story with a stellar set. Though the band amped up the energy right out of the gate, it was with the bluesy 'Leave Me In the Dark' that the group began to take control of the crowd. With Jeff Angell's raspy vocals and a catchy guitar line leading the way, the groove of the track took hold of the crowd with audience members starting to dance along. Add in a steadily building Barrett Martin drum beat, a solid groove from Duff McKagan and some subtle effective backing keys from Benjamin Anderson and it wasn't long before everyone was hooked.
Speaking of capturing the crowd, it was obvious the band was as much into the experience as the audience, with Angell making his way into the crowd to sing and greet a majority of the room during the performance. The frontman also got fans clapping and snapping along to some of the funky beats laid down by Martin and the rhythms of McKagan. Meanwhile, the live wire Anderson enjoyed several standout moments adding just the right amount of funkiness to the band's performance.
Walking Papers showed they know their way around an epic jam, with McKagan and Angell adding some swagger to 'Two Tickets and a Room.' Other standouts included the hard-driving and blistering track 'Capital T,' 'Already Dead' and the night-closing 'The Whole World Is Watching.' In the end, Walking Papers provided a truly rocking set and came out to thank the crowd for their part after the performance was through.
The band's self-titled debut disc is currently out and you can pick it up here in a variety of packages. At present, no other dates are on their schedule, but you can keep abreast of Walking Papers touring activity at this location.
