Sturgill Simpson’s first-ever Austin City Limits appearance is set to premiere this weekend, and during his set, the singer-songwriter delivered his rendition of Willie Nelson’s “I’d Have to Be Crazy.” Check it out above, then compare it to Nelson’s original below.

Simpson also tackled the 1976 The Sound in Your Mind track on his 2013 debut, High Top Mountain. His ACL performance of the song comes 41 years after Nelson’s appearance on the debut episode of the show.

Simpson’s Austin City Limits episode airs this Saturday (Oct. 17). The remainder of ACL’s fall season includes performances from Don Henley on Oct. 24, Gary Clark Jr. and Courtney Barnett on Oct. 31, TV on the Radio and the War on Drugs on Nov. 7 and James Taylor on Nov. 14. Then, it will broadcast this year’s Americana Music Festival on Nov. 21.

The singer dropped his breakthrough sophomore effort, Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, in 2014. He’s expected to release a follow-up -- which will mark his major-label debut on Atlantic -- sometime next year.

Simpson’s tour takes him to Atlanta on Oct. 23-24 followed by a three-night run at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville from Oct. 30-Nov. 1. He has U.S. dates scheduled through the end of next month before heading to Australia for the Byron Bay Bluesfest. Check out a complete list of stops on Simpson’s website.
