Tame Impala Rock Hollywood Tower Rooftop for Intimate Performance – Exclusive Photos
Aussie rockers Tame Impala are drawing bigger and bigger crowds, and that made their recent rooftop performance for Los Angeles' ALT 98.7 something truly special to see. The show took place at the Hollywood Tower overlooking the Los Angeles skyline, and it gave a group of lucky radio winners a chance to catch the band in an intimate setting.
The group took the stage five-wide, with barefoot frontman Kevin Parker leading the way. However, skies threatening and winds kicking up, this would prove to be a challenging set. The band opened the festivities with their dreamy 'Innerspeaker' standout 'Why Won't You Make Up Your Mind?' The crowd got more into the show as Parker introduced the group's red-hot current single, 'Elephant.' As this was a more scaled-back setting, drummer Julien Barbagallo utilized a sampler to keep the beats, and he pulled off a mid-song drum solo by tapping away with both his digits and his nose. Afterward, Parker and the group had a good laugh about the percussion display they'd just witnessed.
Having covered the Flaming Lips' 'Silver Trembling Hands' at past shows, Tame Impala tried another of the group's tunes, 'Are You a Hypnotist?' for the first time onstage. As the skies opened up and rain began to fall, the remainder of the set was a little chaotic, but the band managed 'Feels Like We Only Go Backwards' -- much to the delight of the crowd -- before the weather won out.
Tame Impala have a handful of West Coast shows this week and will start off 2014 by going Down Under and appearing at the Big Day Out traveling festival. Click here for a list of dates, and scroll down to check out exclusive pictures from the ALT 98.7 performance.
