Zooey Deschanel to Play Loretta Lynn in Broadway’s ‘Coal Miner’s Daughter’
America's sweetheart Zooey Deschanel has conquered both the silver and small screens. It's only natural that she sets her sights on Broadway. The actress/musician will play the role of country legend Loretta Lynn in an upcoming stage production.
The 'New Girl' star has been cast in the lead role of Lynn for 'Coal Miner's Daughter,' according to the Hollywood Reporter. 'Coal Miner's Daughter' was originally a biopic released in 1980. The First Lady of country announced Deschanel's casting after her performance at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, introducing the Princess of Quirkiness to the audience in person.
"It's a long way from Butcher Holler to Broadway in New York City," said Lynn. "I never imagined I’d see 'Coal Miner’s Daughter' on a movie screen, and now I can’t believe it’s going to be on a stage for people to see. I’m going to be right there in the front row. And I know Zooey is going to be great -- she sings and writes her own songs just like I do, and we even have the same color eyes!"
Deschanel shared similar sentiments with Lynn about the new project. "Loretta Lynn and her music have been inspirations for me for as long as I can remember," said the She and Him singer. "She is a true legend and to be chosen to play such an iconic woman is a dream come true."
'Coal Miner's Daughter' will chronicle Lynn's journey from living on hard times in Kentucky to her rise to country music royalty. The musical will be produced by Fox Theatricals and Scott Sanders Productions, with details such as the rest of the cast and release date to be revealed in the coming months.
The season finale of 'New Girl' aired this past Tuesday. Fox renewed the breakout hit for a second season this fall. Deschanel and her She and Him partner, M. Ward, released a Christmas album last year.
