Arcade Fire’s Will Butler has shared “City on a Hill,” his first new song since dropping his solo debut Policy earlier this year. It’s also Butler’s second annual Christmas release.

In a tweet, Butler described the track as a “hot new Christmas jam” replete with “some cussin’.” In practice, however, Butler’s latest offering is quite solemn in tone, a piano-driven number reflecting on all the new fears presented by a modern world that often feels as though it hasn't made good on its promise of being that shining city upon a hill. (The cover art seen below is also spot on.) It’s a considerable departure from Policy’s flighty, tongue-in-cheek moments. Take a listen:

Last holiday season, Butler shared “Christmas 2014.” Policy arrived back in March, and Butler has unveiled music videos for album tracks "Anna," "Something's Coming" and "What I Want."

Buter’s main gig Arcade Fire released their most recent album Reflektor in 2013.
