Father John Misty certainly knows how to make his live presence accentuate his more tongue-in-cheek songs, and he’s brought that hip-swaying grandstanding to a handful of late-night stages -- whether it was spreading out on a grand piano on Letterman or grooving atop the kick drum on Seth Meyers.

Such was the case when J. Tillman visited Jimmy Kimmel Live! last night (Oct. 14). The singer-songwriter got down on his knees at various points throughout the performance as he laid out all the reasons the song’s speaker is likely not “The Ideal Husband” (for reference, “I’m finally succumbing,” shortly followed by “let’s put a baby in the oven” is not a surefire way to win over hearts). Check it out in the video above.

“The Ideal Husband” appears on Tillman’s sophomore Father John Misty album, I Love You, Honeybear, which arrived earlier this year. Recently, Tillman unveiled “The Memo,” his first new song since the LP and seemingly a response to his recent entanglements with Ryan Adams, Taylor Swift and Funny or Die.

Tonight (Oct. 15), Tillman is set to play a show in Las Vegas. Then, he has a two-night run in L.A. and an appearance at Treasure Island Music Festival in San Francisco, which runs from Oct. 17-18. Check out his complete itinerary at Sub Pop.
